Avoiding Workplace Back Pain
Injury Prevention
Labor Day was just yesterday, marking an annual celebration of the American worker. The complexion of work has changed a lot over the years, but one thing hasn’t: It’s always necessary to take care of yourself on the job. That includes adopting good habits to help avoid back pain from work.
Focus on Good Form and Posture
It doesn’t matter what kind of job you do eight (or more) hours a day—it can take a toll on your body. Back pain can be hard to avoid when you work at a desk, but having good posture makes a world of difference. Be aware of how you’re sitting, avoiding bad habits like slouching or sitting too far back in your chair. Posture is arguably even more important if you do a physical job that requires lifting. Lift with your legs, don’t bend your back, and don’t try to lift more than you can comfortably manage. Doing too much or not doing it correctly can leave you in a world of hurt.
Get Up from Your Desk and Move
If you work at a higher-impact job in a warehouse or factory, you probably don’t lack for physical movement. But if your job has you sitting sedentary at a desk for long stretches, make sure that you’re getting up and taking the occasional break. Walk to the break room for a healthy snack, head over to a co-worker’s desk for a short chat, or take a short walk around the building and listen to some music. Whatever you prefer, getting up and moving around every hour or so will help you avoid the nagging workplace back pain you might experience if you work too long without a break.
