Do You Have A Spine-Friendly Workspace?
Injury Prevention
Many of our patients spend the majority of their day sitting at their desks. There’s ample evidence that too much sitting is bad for your spine, but what can you do if it is required for your job? Here are our tips to improve your workspace so you can feel better at the end of the day.
Your Desk
It might not seem like there is much you can do for your desk, but the ever-growing increase in standing desk options is a great place to start. Standing desks will help take some of the pressure off your back that over-sitting can cause and can help improve your posture. If you aren’t sitting, you’ll have a harder time developing poor sitting posture!
If standing desks aren’t an option, be sure to set an alarm so you can get up and get moving at least once an hour. You don’t need anything fancy for this – just a quick walk around the office or some stretches at your desk can have a huge impact. We’ll be happy to suggest some stretches during your next chiropractic adjustment.
Your Chair
While standing desks are great, you can’t spend the whole day standing either. Find a chair that is good for your posture but also comfortable and cushiony for your body. You’ll also want a chair that has:
- The ability to swivel or roll
- Arm support
- Adjustable height
Ordering a chair with these functionalities can help support you while you sit instead of causing problems.
Your Screen
Your computer screen should be at or just below eye level. It is very important to keep your head level. Spending most of your day with your head even just slightly tilted down can cause issues with your shoulders and neck later on. If you work from a laptop, invest in a laptop stand or just stack up some books to keep it at eye level.
