The holidays are a wonderful time of year, but also include a lot of travel. Getting together with friends and family is nice, but the back pain that comes with long road trips – not so much. Here are our tips to help you drive away from back pain.

Get a Move On

Whether or not you suffer from chronic back pain, long hours on the road prevent you from standing up and moving when you need to. Oversitting is a common cause of back pain and research shows that one way to prevent it is to get up and get moving. Be sure to stop the car every few hours and get a move on. Stretch your legs and back and take a short walk. You can even plan your stops to check out local sites or parks along the way so you can prevent back pain while enjoying the journey.

Rest Up

A pre-road trip plan should include plenty of rest. Not only should you be well-rested to ensure you get to your destination safely, but also because a lack of sleep can increase your back pain. Research has shown that when you don’t get enough restful sleep, you risk an increased tendency to suffer from pain. And the only thing worse than sitting in traffic is sitting in traffic in pain! Even if you aren’t driving and think you might rest up on the road, keep in mind that sleeping in a scrunched-up position will probably leave you even more sore than before. Aim to get at least six hours of good sleep each night, but especially before a long road trip.
