By making smarter food choices, you can learn how to avoid overeating. See how to have a healthy Thanksgiving with these five tips.

Drink Lots of Water

Hydration is essential year-round, but especially before a big meal. Water helps your body determine whether or not you are starving or if you are eating for the sake of eating. Keep your appetite under control by drinking a lot of water throughout the day to avoid sneaking bites of pumpkin pie before dinner.

Snack Throughout the Day

Fasting before Thanksgiving might seem like a good idea, but it leads to overeating. Instead, eat a healthy breakfast in the morning to stay energized and satisfied throughout the day. It is also important for you to make smarter food choices throughout the day. For example, rather than snacking on chips and dip, choose crunchy vegetables and healthy dips. Snacking throughout the day will keep you feeling full, but you will still have room for dinner!

Eat Slowly

We know it sounds easier than it is, but it takes your stomach around 20 minutes to signal your brain that you are full. So, the key on how to avoid overeating is to take your time while eating. The average person overeats during those 20 minutes, causing stomachaches later on. Pacing yourself will help. Enjoy every bite of your Thanksgiving meal as you take pauses between bites.

Don't Head to the Couch

While you'll probably feel like just lounging on the couch after all that turkey, staying active with a healthy Thanksgiving stroll can help you feel better. After eating, take a walk around the neighborhood with your friends and family. While burning some calories, this is also a great way to stretch after sitting for an extended period.
