How to Stretch While Traveling
Seasonal Tips
As soon as school is out, people begin focusing their attention on travel plans. The preparations for summer vacations involve much more than you might think. Traveling is hard on the body, so knowing how to stretch makes all the difference. Here are four stretches to do while sitting to help avoid back pain.
1. Side Stretch
Sitting for an extended period tends to cause pressure in the low back muscles. You can relieve some pressure by performing a side stretch and stretching out the back. Take a few seconds to bend to one side, then return to your starting position. Continue this motion on the other side. Keep your movements slow and steady to avoid further discomfort.
2. Seated Twist
One of the stretches to do while sitting is the seated twist. Seating twists are perfect for long-distance travel plans. You can do them from your seat. As you face forward, grasp the chair below and twist your body, keeping your face forward. Come back to the starting position and do it the other way. A few repetitions of this stretch will help loosen up the muscles and stimulate blood flow to that area.
3. Calf Stretch
Long rides are not just hard on the back. Blood clots can form if people sit for long periods, which usually begin in the legs. When sitting for a long time, you should try a calf stretch before and after. Standing up, bend at the hips and place your hands on the floor. Walk your hands out until your body makes a āVā shape so that your buttocks points upwards. While in this position, alternate lifting your heels to move up and down the calves. This stretch helps promote better blood flow.
4. Toe Raises
Toe raises are another great way to stretch the calves and back. Sit with your feet hip-width apart and point the toes down, going onto the balls of your feet and push into the ground for maximum stretching. Repeat as necessary.
