Need Neck Pain Relief? Try Chiropractic!
Chiropractic Care
Our heads are, on average, about 12 pounds. That’s a lot of weight to balance on top of a thin column of bone and nerves! We’re able to move our head in just about any direction because of the flexibility of our necks, but that same freedom usually comes with a cost. The weight of our heads combined with poor posture tends to stress the muscles and nerves in our necks, which then results in numerous types of neck pain. You can get anything from pinched nerves to herniated discs...even muscle strains or bone spurs have happened doing everyday tasks. Thankfully, with the use of chiropractic care and stretching, we can help provide neck pain relief.
Chiropractic Care and Neck Pain Relief
Chiropractors approach neck pain with a series of neck-specific adjustments. These adjustments focus on the nerves and muscles of the neck, returning all of the parts back into their correct placements. This is one of the best, immediate, and non-invasive ways to treat neck pain. The process stretches out your neck and allows for natural lengthening and pressure relief.
Neck Pain Stretching
Since neck pain is very common and easy to get, here are a few exercises that will help to strengthen and lengthen the elements of your neck. Using them will help you find some tension relief and can even help to treat chronic pains (and they feel good, too). Remember not to overextend or exert yourself when doing these stretches. A little discomfort can be good, but pain is where you should stop and see a professional like us for help.
- Standing Forward Fold: This is one of the best options for neck pain stretching because once you are in the stretch, your head is free and the natural weight of your head will help to decompress your spine. Begin with your feet under your hips and fold forward at the waist. Lower your top half as far as you can without losing your balance—try to touch the ground. Once you are there, release the muscles in your neck and let your head hang freely.
- Ear to Shoulder: These are great neck strengthening exercises, and you can do them from anywhere! They work by relaxing one side of the neck while extending the other. This is not a common motion that we do during the day, so the stretch really helps relieve pressures. It’s as simple as sitting with a straight back and tilting your head to lower one ear as far to the shoulder as possible without overextending your neck.
- Legs Up: This stretch will help to lengthen your neck and in turn, let you do more neck strengthening exercises. This is a good exercise for finding a relaxing and non-demanding stretch for the whole body. Start by laying down close to a wall and kicking your feet up onto the wall itself. Scoot your butt towards the wall while keeping your legs up. You should reach the point of having your butt touch the wall, with nowhere left to move, and your legs straight up. Wiggle the tension out of your lower back and breath up through the spine and imagine lengthening your neck and spine during this position.
