Our Face Cloth Covering Tips
Health and Wellness
As of April 17, New Yorkers are required to wear face masks or coverings while out in public. Here’s what you need to know.
How effective are masks?
In order to help prevent the spread of coronavirus, face coverings have been mandated in New York. When unable to socially distance, one should have their face covered, but maintaining a distance of at least six feet is always preferred.
Studies show that homemade masks are significantly less effective than surgical masks, but they are effective in preventing the spread of the disease. They offer a physical barrier from viral particles, though they don’t have the filters that N95 respirators do. But, when you need to go out in public for a doctor’s appointment or a trip to the grocery store, they are certainly better than nothing.
Remember, save the surgical masks and/or N95 respirators for healthcare workers, as they are facing shortages and need those masks to treat coronavirus patients.
How do I make a mask?
Not all of us are sewing experts, but there are still options! Click here for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention step-by-step instructions on making a no-sew mask.
Keep these steps in mind when you’re ready to wear your mask:
- Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water before putting on your mask or touching it
- Make sure your entire nose and mouth area is covered by the mask
- When you are out, avoid touching the mask so you don’t contaminate it
- Don’t take your mask off while out in public
- Once you get home, take your mask off from the back, not by pulling down the front of it
- Immediately wash the mask to prevent contamination
- Wash your hands after taking the mask off and again after you’ve washed it
You can wash your mask by hand or put them in mesh wash bags in the washing machine and use a high heat setting. You should wash your mask before and after each use.
If you can’t make your own mask, crafters on Etsy have plenty available, though keep in mind that shipping times may take longer than usual.
