The new school season is quickly approaching and although different counties are in different phases, many kids are headed back to the classroom. Beyond practicing patience and flexibility (it’s important for your mental health, too!), we have some suggestions to help keep your kids safe and healthy during the school year.
Use Your Own School Supplies
Back to school is already stressful enough, so avoid the unnecessary stress of sharing supplies by sending your child to school with plenty of their own. Avoid relying on communal school supplies unless absolutely necessary. Make sure your child has their own set of supplies and discuss boundaries when it comes to sharing.
Don’t Send Sick Kids to School
This one is important at any time, but especially during a pandemic. If your child is displaying symptoms of illness, keep them home. Develop a routine to check their temperature each morning and keep them out of the classroom if they have a fever. If information hasn’t already been shared with you regarding sick policies, reach out to your child’s school.
Hand Washing & Hand Sanitizer
We’ve heard it for months now – one of the best ways to combat coronavirus is to regularly wash hands and wash them well. Make sure your child knows how to wash their hands properly (click here for tips) and that they wash them every chance they get. Supply them with their own hand sanitizer that is alcohol-based and 60% or higher is case handwashing isn’t an option.
Face Masks
Face masks have been mandated in New York since April 17th, so be sure your child has a well-fitting mask for going back to school. They should have a few spares with them in case of damage or contamination. Pick masks that fit comfortably and properly and teach your child the importance of not playing with or touching the mask.
