Tips for Soreness After a Workout
Chiropractic for Athletes
Are you hitting the gym harder in 2024? Chances are good that you’re a bit more sore than usual these days—but chiropractic care can help with post-workout recovery. Seeing a chiropractor after your workout is one of the best things you can do to manage muscle soreness, avoid injuries, and keep building toward a better you.
Tips for Handling Soreness After Your Workout
Make Stretching Part of the Routine
The importance of daily stretching just can’t be understated, and that’s especially true if you exercise regularly. Stretching prepares your muscles for strenuous activities, keeps them limber and strong, and can help keep them loose as part of your post-workout recovery. Stretching to warm up and cool down for exercise is a must, and you may also want to consider making stretching part of your morning and pre-bedtime routines.
Get Your Fill of Fluids
Your body needs plenty of fluids to operate at its full potential. And if you work out, you’re losing even more fluids that need to be replenished. If you’re not already in the habit, try drinking at least eight glasses of water a day, if not more. On gym days, you’ll want to increase your fluid intake even more and stop for drinks between sets. Drinking water after your workout helps support muscle recovery, which can minimize soreness.
Try Heat and Ice for Post-Workout Recovery
For extra help reducing soreness after a workout, heat and ice can do a lot of heavy lifting. Cold packs can help quell inflammation and heat helps increase blood flow, both of which support smooth post-workout recovery. Try using heat immediately after your workout and switching to ice at the 24-hour mark. You don’t even need to use a compress to enjoy the benefits—a nice, warm bath or hot shower can work wonders.
See a Chiropractor After (or Before) a Workout
Chiropractic care can help support your fitness goals and expedite the post-workout recovery process. It’s completely safe to get an adjustment and exercise in the same day, though you’ll probably want to leave about 30 minutes in between so that your body can adapt. And while seeing a chiropractor after a workout can help reduce delayed muscle soreness, some prefer to get adjusted beforehand. We may recommend one or the other depending on different factors, but the choice is ultimately yours.
