The holidays make look different this year, but it is still a busy time of year. Whether it’s shopping, socially-distanced holiday events, or travel, exercise is often the first thing on your list that gets pushed to the side. Maintaining your health is more important than ever, so here are a few tips to help you stay active and healthy during the holidays.

Make a Plan

If you know your week is busier than usual and you can’t maintain your regular exercise routine, plan ahead and reschedule whenever possible. If you just can’t make it work, try setting your alarm just 30 minutes earlier and slip on your sneakers for a brisk walk outside. Walking is a great form of exercise and can help clear your mind so you start your day off right.

Speaking of walking, anytime you head out for some holiday shopping, make sure you park at the end of the parking lot to get in some more steps and take the stairs whenever possible.

Make Movement a Priority

You may not be able to exercise as usual, but you can still incorporate bodyweight movements and stay active at home. When brushing your teeth or standing in line at the store, try doing calf raises. Vacuuming is also a great time to get in some walking lunges. If you are doing holiday decorating or hauling shopping or grocery bags, remember to lift with your legs (and maybe add in a few bicep curls). It might seem silly, but every bit of movement will benefit your body.

Bring in the Whole Family

Whether you are visiting with family this year or staying with your own household, the whole family can join you and get moving. Organize hikes, after-dinner walks, or even a game of catch or football. It’s a great way to spend time together and stay active.
