Work From Home Spinal Health Tips
Injury Prevention
2020 has certainly been a year of major change, and working remotely is one of them. People across the world have shifted from working in an office to working from home, and it is a huge adjustment. Whether you are still getting used to your new workspace or are fully thriving in a work from home environment, our tips can help keep your spine healthy. Here’s what you need to know.
Establish a Workstation
Your couch may be comfortable, but it’s not ideal for eight hours of work each day. Just as you’ve established proper office ergonomics, the same rules apply at home. Make sure you have plenty of space to sit at a table or desk or to stand and work (a mix of both is best). Your forearms should be parallel to the ground whether you are seated or standing and if you are sitting, your thighs should be parallel to the ground, too. Sit in a chair that has proper back support. If you don’t have one and are unable to invest in one at this time, a small rolled-up towel can provide lumbar support just as well. Keep your computer at eye level and do proper posture check-ins regularly.
Stand and Stretch
Sometimes you are so focused on your work that you forget to move your body. One way to remember to keep moving is to set a timer for a least once an hour. During this time, stretch your legs and back and/or take a quick walk around the house. This will get your blood pumping and supply healing nutrients and fresh oxygen throughout your body. Not only will this help you feel better, but it can help prevent injury.
Give Yourself a Break
When you work in an office, you probably take a number of small breaks without even realizing it. Whether it’s going to fill up your water bottle, using the restroom, or catching up with co-workers, it’s important to give your mind a rest. When working from home, this can be harder to do. Just as you set your alarm to take stretch breaks and be active, make sure you give yourself a brain break, too. This can help manage your stress and refocus your attention so you will feel better physically and mentally.
